DENVER MURAL WINS NATIONAL ARTS AWARD

By
Margaret Jackson

If you spend any time on the Cherry Creek bike path, then you are probably familiar with the "City of the Sun" mural at Speer Boulevard and Blake Street.

The mural was created by artist Gemma Bayly, who hand-painted every single line in her mandalas and designed it as a prayer wheel reminiscent of the night sky with a central mandala in gold. "Every single line represents a prayer of peace, prosperity and unity for the people of Denver," Gemma explains.

It's one of 115 murals throughout Denver that have abated 200,000 square feet of graffiti-prone areas and engaged more than 2,000 youths in creating artwork. It spans nearly 1,000 square feet and is inspired by both mathematics and nature.

The mural was recently honored by Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education in the United States.

Americans for the Arts honored 38 outstanding public arts projects created in 2015 through the Public Art Network Year in Review program.  The works were chosen from 260 entries across the country and recognized at the Americans for the Arts' 2016 Annual Convention in Boston.

We're so proud that the gorgeous "City of the Sun" mural represented the great Mile High City!
