Three All-natural ways to keep the mosquitoes at bay Apparently, mosquitoes hate all of the scents we love. 1. Put a dryer sheet in your pocket Turns out, there's actually science behind this age-old myth. Dryer sheets contain two chemicals that keep gnats and mosquitoes away: linalool, which is toxic to some types of insects, and beta-citronellol, which is found in citronella, the ultimate mosquito repellent. So, yeah, keep one in your pocket, or if you're really committed, rub one on your arms and any other exposed skin. 2. Singe some coffee grounds with a lighter Turns out, there's actually science behind this age-old myth. Start with dry grounds. If you are using used grounds, put them in a bowl covered with foil and leave it in a cool, dark place until the grounds are completely dry. -- Place the grounds either in a bowl or on a flat surface (like a piece of aluminum foil) outside. -- Burn the grounds like you would burn incense. -- Choose a spot upwind of your location for best results. -- For an extra dose of repellent, add fresh bay leaves to the fire. -- For an outdoor event, you might want to set up several of these burning stations surrounding the area of the gathering 3. Boil some garlic cloves and spray the water in mosquito-heavy areas Just peel and crush a few cloves of garlic and boil them for around 20 minutes. Pour the pungent garlic water into a spray bottle and squirt it wherever your favorite mosquitoes like to hang out. |
