YES, THERE IS A RIGHT WAY TO HANG THE TOILET PAPER

Let’s settle this once and for all: Is there really a “right way” to hang toilet paper? For such a small detail, this question has sparked countless debates, threatened the peace of otherwise happy households, and even become a test of compatibility for some couples. So, which is it—over the top or from behind? We spoke to the experts to flush out the truth.

TEAM “OVER THE TOP” IS THE WINNING SIDE
According to Ashley Iredale, a team leader at the consumer advocacy group CHOICE, this debate isn’t as complicated as people think.

“There are two types of people in the world—those who hang the toilet paper over the top, and those who are wrong,”

says Iredale, with a conviction usually reserved for matters far more pressing than bathroom etiquette. But he’s not just throwing shade—there’s some serious history to back him up.

It turns out that back in 1891, Seth Wheeler, the inventor of perforated toilet paper (yes, that’s a thing), submitted a patent for his genius creation. His design? A roll of toilet paper hanging over the top. So, not only is this the preferred method for most, but it’s also the original intention. “Over the top” not only looks tidy but is also far more practical. It's easier to grab, less likely to cause a chaotic unraveling, and just feels... right.

BUT WHAT ABOUT “FROM BEHIND” FANS?
Let’s not completely ignore the other camp. People who position the roll to unfurl against the wall often argue that it looks neater or reduces the chances of accidental unrolling, especially if you have pets or kids who love to spin the roll like they’re trying to win the lottery. And while we get that logic, the experts aren’t budging. Hanging the toilet paper from behind might work for you, but historically and practically speaking, it’s the underdog of this debate - literally.
