WHAT IS THE IDEAL TEMPERATURE FOR YOUR HOME?

Pinterest

Getting the most out of your thermostat isn't just about comfort - it's also about cutting down on energy use and saving some cash. Keeping an eye on your system's performance and getting heads up about maintenance can help your system run smoothly for longer. And when you sync your thermostat with other smart gadgets around the house, you amp up the convenience and connectivity of your living space.

SET IT AND FORGET IT
A "set it and forget it" attitude doesn't really work with thermostats. Staying in tune with your thermostat settings is key to keeping your HVAC system in top shape and your bills on the lower side. Knowing how to adjust your thermostat for different times and days lets you tailor your heating and cooling, so you're comfortable when you're home and saving energy when you're not. For those with smart thermostats, leveraging their insights can optimize your energy use while keeping your living space cozy.

SUMMER VS WINTER
When summer turns up the heat, your cooling system might be tempted to go into overdrive, even when you're out and about. But shutting it off entirely could leave you with a sauna-like house that's tough to cool down later.

In summer, try setting your thermostat around 78°F when you're away. If your thermostat can be programmed, dial it down to a comfy level before you come back.

In the chillier months, a cozy 68°F should do the trick when you're home and awake. At night or when you're out, dropping the temp a bit can trim your heating bill.

DAY VS NIGHT
Good sleep is crucial, and believe it or not, your thermostat settings play a role. The ideal temperature changes from day to night not just for comfort, but for energy efficiency too.

Summer daytime: Setting your thermostat to about 78°F while you're away strikes a balance. Home time might call for a slight adjustment for extra comfort.
Summer nighttime: A nighttime setting of 72°F-75°F is ideal for those summer zzz's.

Winter daytime: A comfortable daytime setting in winter hovers around 68°F, with room for lowering it a bit if you're looking to save more.
Winter nighttime: Drop the temp a few degrees at night, to around 62°F-65°F. Layering up with blankets and warm pajamas can keep you cozy without cranking up the heat and save you some money.
