DID YOU KNOW You can hear your organs in this room Located in Washington D.C., Microsoft's anechoic chamber is so silent that you can hear your own organs working and the blood moving through your body. The room's -20.35 decibel silence can cause hallucinations, and the longest anyone has been able to bear it is just under an hour. It highlights the extreme effects architecture and design can have on human perception and physical well-being. The room has an onion-like construction that isolates it from the rest of the building and the outside world in order to create absolute stillness. It is constructed of six layers of concrete and steel. To stop sound waves from reflecting back into the space, fiberglass wedges are put inside the walls, ceiling and floor. The floor is a grid of dangling cables that absorb sound. |
