HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR JEANS? Marie Clare Jeans are a versatile wardrobe item that many people want to keep in good condition for as long as possible. While towels, sheets and pillows should be washed after a specific period of time, there is no agreed-upon schedule for washing denim. Cleaning denim after every wear is not necessary and may cause it to deteriorate more quickly. According to Adam Taubenfligel, co-founder of a sustainable denim company, denim does not require a lot of washing due to its durable fiber. However, the exact number of times jeans can be worn without washing can vary depending on a variety of factors. In general, it is recommended that jeans should be washed between every three to ten wears. But if you're not sweating in them and they smell clean, it's okay to hold off on washing. Sweat, weather and your activity level all play a role. If your jeans are covered in mud, food, or other substances, it makes sense to wash them immediately. And odor means bacteria is percolating in your pants and can eat away at the fabric, so go ahead and give your denim the sniff-test if you're unsure. Whether you have rigid denim (100% cotton) or stretch denim (a cotton and Lycra or spandex blend) can impact how often you should wash your jeans. Rigid denim will loosen slightly with wear, so some people prefer to wash their jeans after a few wears to tighten the weave. Stretch denim is made to retain its shape even after many wears, so you should only wash your stretch denim jeans if they are dirty past the point of spot cleaning. Washing denim less frequently can preserve the nature of the fibers and elongate the life of your jeans. Although there are some people who never wash their jeans, it is not recommended because bacteria and sloughed-off skin stick to them, creating an odor you don't want hanging around. Also, freezing jeans will not kill all bacteria, contrary to what you may have heard before. But, if you're really not keen on washing your denim, you can try out an old Broadway theatre trick and mist your denim them with vodka, a colorless and unscented deodorizer. Who knew?
