National parks are the ultimate destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the wonders of the great outdoors. If you're considering a visit to a national park, here are some tips to help you plan a successful trip.

BEFORE YOUR TRIP

There are plenty of things you can do ahead of time to make your trip a success.

Figure out which park you'd like to visit! Consider the season you’ll be visiting the park, the length of your trip, and what kind of park activities make sense for your group. Do your research on the park’s website and social media channels for information that might be helpful during your visit, and don't forget to check the weather and pack accordingly.

Explore the ways you might want to enjoy your time there. From driving tours to backcountry hikes, there are many ways to enjoy the wonder of national parks. Check the park’s website and download the National Park Service app to explore maps, park tours, amenities, accessibility information, and visitor attractions at the park of your choice.

Don't forget safety. It’s important to develop and practice an emergency plan that will help you and your group respond to a lost or injured group member. You shouldn't count on cell phone reception in parks, so it’s important to develop and practice your plan before you head out.

Lastly, check out the National Park Service's official list of 10 must-haves to pack when planning your visit.

DURING YOUR TRIP

If you’re traveling as a group, stay together and make sure no one wanders too far. Separation from the group could lead to a lost or injured person, so it’s best to stick to the buddy system when in a park.

Maintain a safe distance between yourself and any park wildlife. Just as wildlife poses a risk to visitors, visitors also threaten park wildlife. Give animals room to move and observe from a distance.

And most importantly, make sure to follow the seven Leave No Trace principles to help keep the park a safe, clean place for all visitors and wildlife.
