SURPRISING USES FOR BAKING SODA

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a common household item found in almost every kitchen. While most people know it for its role in baking and as an odor absorber in the fridge, this humble powder has a variety of surprising uses all around the home. From cleaning solutions to personal care hacks, here’s how baking soda can become your secret weapon for everyday problems.

NATURAL SURFACE CLEANER
Baking soda is an excellent non-toxic cleaner for many surfaces around the house. Mix it with water to form a paste that works well on countertops, sinks, and stovetops. The mild abrasiveness helps scrub away grime without scratching surfaces. You can also sprinkle it on a damp sponge to clean stainless steel appliances without leaving streaks.

DEODORIZE CARPETS AND UPHOLSTERY
Sprinkle baking soda on carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture to help neutralize odors. Let it sit for at least 15-20 minutes (or even overnight for stronger smells), and then vacuum it up. This works great for pet odors, spilled food, and general mustiness.

UNCLOG DRAINS
If you have a slow drain, baking soda can be a safe alternative to harsh chemicals. Pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar. Let it fizz for a few minutes, then flush with hot water. This natural reaction helps break up clogs and leaves your drains smelling fresh.

FRESHEN UP YOUR LAUNDRY
Adding a cup of baking soda to your laundry load can help brighten whites and neutralize odors. It’s especially useful for sweaty gym clothes or towels that have a musty smell. Baking soda also acts as a natural fabric softener, leaving clothes feeling fresh without any harsh chemicals.

SHINE SILVERWARE
Baking soda is great for cleaning tarnished silver without needing harsh polishes. Make a paste with water and baking soda, then gently rub it onto your silverware. Rinse and buff with a clean cloth to restore the shine.

EXTINGUISH SMALL GREASE FIRES
Baking soda can act as a fire extinguisher in case of a small kitchen grease fire. It releases carbon dioxide when heated, which can help smother the flames. If a grease fire starts on the stove, toss a handful of baking soda onto the fire (never use water), and it may help put it out safely.

REMOVE STAINS FROM MUGS AND TUPPERWARE
Stains from coffee, tea, and food can be tough to remove from mugs and plastic containers. Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the stained surface, scrub with a damp cloth or sponge, and rinse. The abrasiveness of baking soda lifts stains without scratching the surface.

ELIMINATE SHOE ODORS
Tired of smelly shoes? Sprinkle baking soda inside shoes to absorb moisture and odors. Let it sit overnight, then shake out the powder in the morning. Your shoes will smell fresher, and the baking soda will help keep moisture at bay, reducing the chance of future odors.

BOOST DISHWASHER DETERGENT
If your dishwasher isn’t cleaning as effectively as it should, baking soda can help. Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda into the detergent compartment along with your regular dishwasher detergent. It will help boost cleaning power, reduce water spots, and neutralize odors inside the dishwasher.

CLEAN HAIRBRUSHES AND COMBS
Residue from hair products can build up on brushes and combs over time. Soak them in a mixture of warm water and baking soda for about 30 minutes, then rinse and let them air dry. This helps remove oils and product buildup without damaging your hair tools.

REMOVE GREASE STAINS FROM CLOTHES
Got an oily stain on your favorite shirt? Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the grease stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. The baking soda absorbs the oil, making it easier to wash out. Launder as usual, and the stain should be significantly reduced, if not gone entirely.

CLEAN YOUR MICROWAVE
A splattered microwave can be tough to clean, but baking soda makes it easier. Place a bowl of water with a tablespoon of baking soda in the microwave and heat it for about 3-5 minutes. The steam will loosen food particles, making it easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Baking soda is one of the most versatile and inexpensive products you can have at home. Whether you’re cleaning, deodorizing, or even firefighting, this common household item can help you tackle a variety of tasks with ease.
