OLD HOLLYWOOD STARS PAID HOW MUCH?!

As the Silent Era in movies transitioned into "talkies" and Technicolor, the Golden Age of movies was born. With the Golden Age came the movie stars that made these films so iconic. They flocked to Hollywood and the surrounding areas to build new lives, and to live the Hollywood way of life. Of course, an impressive home was needed to keep up with this glamorous lifestyle, and movie stars weren't shy about spending money to buy - or make - their home dreams a reality.

Jayne Mansfield reinvented the color pink when she purchased this Mediterranean-style home for $76,000 (around $750,000 today) in 1958,  when the average cost of a house was $7,500. It's important to note that Mansfield received over $150,000 (almost $1.5 million today) in free merchandise to outfit the house in Hollywood glamour. Once the house was purchased, she and husband Mickey Hargitay transformed the estate into the Pink Palace, complete with a heart-shaped pool and bathtub,  hand-crafted wooden fireplace and - if you can believe it - a Champagne fountain.

Marilyn Monroe only bought one property, a one-story hacienda-style house with four bedrooms, three baths, swimming pool, expansive yard, and citrus grove in Brentwood, CA. She purchased the home for $77,500 in 1962, just six months before her death.

Another celebrity that bought in Brentwood is the amazing Joan Crawford, who paid $57,500 in 1928 (just shy of $1 million today)  for her gorgeous Bristol Avenue home. According to Joan, she used $12,000 in equity she had accrued on her Roxbury Drive house as a down payment. It took over a year to furnish the property with decor Joan describes as "hodgepodge." The 10-room house, nicknamed "El JoDo" (a combination of the names of Joan and husband Douglas) gave Joan a home for nearly three decades.

Frank Sinatra had a gorgeous Palm Spring mid-century modern house specially designed for him in 1947. The estate, which he called Twin Palms, cost $150,000 to build, which translates to $2 million today.

Elvis Presley was just 22 years old when he purchased Graceland, his famous Tennessee mansion. He spend $102,000 on the estate in 1957 ($1.02 million today). It's now the most visited home in the United States, with over 650,000 visitors each year. Presley had purchased a more modest home for himself and his family in Memphis for $40,000 ($820,000 today), but as his fame grew, the number of fans congregating outside that home multiplied and neighbors considered Presley's presence a nuisance.

The talented Judy Garland had a traditional red brick Bel Air home built in 1938, the year before she skyrocketed to fame with The Wizard of Oz. She was 16 at the time. While there is no known record of how much Garland originally paid for the house, the 2.5 acre estate sold for $6.7 million in 2011.
