If you’ve ever found yourself frantically searching the spice rack on Thanksgiving Eve—or begging a neighbor for an extra can of pumpkin—you’re not alone. DoorDash reports that Thanksgiving Eve is officially the busiest grocery delivery day of the year, with orders nearly 90 percent higher than average. The 2024 data shows shoppers aren’t just buying ingredients—they’re racing to replace or restock nearly every cooking, serving, and hosting tool imaginable. Items like heat bags (up a jaw-dropping 2,400 percent) and serving trays (+2,100 percent) topped the list, followed by graters and peelers (+1,400 percent). Even mixers, rolling pins, and measuring cups saw major surges as hosts scrambled to fill last-minute gaps.
“Thanksgiving Eve is the biggest grocery delivery day of the year,” DoorDash noted. “Shoppers race to grab those last-minute must-haves before the big feast.”
Pantry Panic
Pantry staples also flew off the shelves. Sage, nutmeg, and vanilla extract were among the most-ordered items, proving that even seasoned cooks forget the seasoning. Orders for whole turkeys soared 820 percent, while turkey legs jumped 930 percent—proving the drumstick is still king. Sales of peanut oil and charcoal also spiked as more chefs took their turkey frying and smoking outdoors. Some even added outdoor chairs and folding tables to their orders to seat last-minute guests. In a lighter twist, DoorDash noted rising interest in sneakers, hoodies, and hand warmers—likely from Turkey Trot participants caught off guard by chilly weather. 
Still Shopping on the Big Day
The shopping frenzy didn’t stop once the turkey was in the oven. On Thanksgiving Day, shoppers kept adding forgotten must-haves to their carts. The biggest surge came from meat thermometers—up an incredible 2,960 percent. Also in high demand: can openers, kitchen knives, and cake pans (+1,200 percent). Measuring cups rose another 560 percent, and bakery pies were up 510 percent as hosts realized dessert was missing in action. When it came to sides, marshmallows, brown sugar, and pecans were last-minute lifesavers for sweet potato casseroles. Gravy, disposable plates, cups, and foil containers also topped the list for quick serving and cleanup. What We Learn From All This
