Did You Know? Cats don't taste sweetness the way we do

Your cat may be fascinated by the sound of a treat bag, but dessert is unlikely to impress. Unlike people and dogs, domestic cats don't have a working sweet-taste receptor. A change in a gene called Tas1r2 means they can't detect sweetness in the usual mammalian way.

That trait fits the way cats eat. As obligate carnivores, they evolved to get the nutrients they need from meat. Recognizing sugar offered little advantage, and part of the genetic recipe for the sweet receptor became nonfunctional.

Cats still have a working sense of taste, including the ability to recognize other flavors. Sugar simply doesn't create the same sensation it does for us. Their lack of a sweet tooth isn't stubbornness or pickiness. It's biology.
