The secondhand lamp worth a second look

A green ceramic table lamp with a cream shade on a wood table.

The shade is a little wrong. The base, though, is a wonderful shade of green, with a shape you haven't seen in every store. That's the secondhand lamp worth pausing over.

Shopping for an older lamp can be more interesting when you stop trying to identify a famous designer and start looking at the object itself. A ceramic base with a slightly uneven glaze, a slim metal stem, a generous curve: one good detail can be enough to build a corner around.

Look at the shape before the label

Imagine the lamp in silhouette. Does it have a broad, grounded shape or a tall, narrow one? Would it look at home beside your low sofa, or disappear behind the arm? A close-up listing photo can make a little bedside lamp look substantial. Ask for the overall height and widest measurement, then compare them with the spot you have in mind.

It helps to photograph that spot before you browse. Include the table, the chair beside it, and whatever hangs on the wall. The lamp will be part of that group, even if the seller has photographed it alone against a white background.

For a small lesson in looking, see Greta von Nessen's Anywhere Lamp in the Smithsonian collection. Its domed orange shade sits inside a curved metal frame. You can appreciate the relationship between those two shapes without knowing its name or its date. Apply the same attention to the uncredited lamp on the next shelf.

Picture the shade as part of the purchase

A shade changes a lamp's proportions. A wide shade can make a narrow base feel more substantial; a tall one can emphasize height. Try a quick paper outline beside a photo of the base, or compare a few lamps you already like. You're looking for a combination that pleases your eye, not a rule about the correct fraction of an inch.

If the shade is missing or isn't one you'd keep, include a replacement in your plans before deciding the lamp is a bargain. Record the existing shade's measurements and attachment details rather than assuming that any similar-looking replacement will fit.

Also decide which marks you actually enjoy. A small variation in a ceramic glaze might be the detail that drew you in. A stain you'd spend the next month trying to hide is something else. You don't have to develop a taste for every sign of age just because the piece is old.

Finally, give it a place to go. The green ceramic lamp might be lovely on a wood desk with one framed print above it. It doesn't need matching green pillows, a matching green vase, and a matching green throw to explain its presence. Let the lamp be the find.
