10 AIR CONDITIONING MISTAKES TO AVOID THIS SUMMER

Home equity growth
No one likes sweating it out at home during a heatwave — especially while waiting on an overbooked HVAC tech. Fortunately, most AC mishaps can be avoided with a little know-how and seasonal prep. Below are the top 10 mistakes that can shorten your air conditioner’s lifespan or leave you with sky-high bills (and temps). Plus, if your AC ever goes out, we’ve got tips to help you stay cool without it.

1. SKIPPING SEASONAL MAINTENANCE

Don’t wait until your AC gives out in July to call a technician. Spring is the sweet spot for a system checkup — before the heat (and appointment slots) hit full blast.

2. FORGETTING TO CHANGE THE AIR FILTER

A clogged filter makes your system work harder and lowers indoor air quality. Swap it out every 1 to 3 months, depending on pets, allergies, or how much your system runs.

3. NEGLECTING DIRTY COILS

Dirt and dust buildup can smother your system’s coils. Gently cleaning them — or having a pro do it — helps your unit run cooler, longer, and more efficiently.

4. MISUSING THE THERMOSTAT

Setting the temperature way up when you leave, then way down when you return, sounds smart — but it actually forces your AC to work overtime. Instead, pick a steady, comfortable temp and stick to it.

5. PLANTING TOO CLOSE TO THE UNIT

We get it — the outdoor AC unit isn’t exactly pretty. But crowding it with shrubs or décor can limit airflow and lead to overheating. Give it 2 to 3 feet of breathing room.

6. SETTING THE TEMP TOO LOW

If it’s 95° outside, don’t expect your AC to hit 65° inside. Most systems max out at cooling 20° below the outside temp. Setting the thermostat too low will only burn energy without results.

7. POOR THERMOSTAT PLACEMENT

Thermostats need to live in central, interior spaces — away from vents, ovens, or direct sun — to get accurate readings. A bad location can trick your system into running when it doesn’t need to.

8. BUYING THE WRONG SIZE UNIT

Too small and it won’t keep up. Too big and it cools too fast to remove humidity, leaving your home damp and uncomfortable. Always choose a unit that fits your home’s square footage.

9. CLOSING OFF VENTS

Think closing vents saves energy? It doesn’t. It can throw off airflow, strain the system, and even cause duct damage. Better to keep air moving evenly throughout your home.

10. IGNORING WARNING SIGNS

Odd noises, smells, or weak airflow? Don’t wait. Early attention can mean the difference between a simple fix and a full-on breakdown.

NO AC? HERE’S HOW TO STAY COOL

Whether your system is on the fritz or you’re just trying to save energy, try these tricks to keep cool naturally:
  • Close curtains and blinds
Block out direct sun to prevent heat buildup.

  • Add outdoor shades or awnings
These can reduce indoor temps by several degrees.

  • Switch to LED bulbs
They emit less heat than traditional lights.

  • Check insulation
Poor insulation can make one room feel like a sauna.

  • Limit appliance use
Save baking and laundry for early mornings or late nights.

  • Use ceiling or box fans
Air movement makes a big difference in comfort.

  • Run exhaust fans
Especially in the bathroom and kitchen, to push out heat and moisture.

  • Try damp sheets
Hang one in front of an open window for a breezy evaporative effect.

  • Make a DIY cooler
Ice in a bowl with a fan pointed at it = homemade chill zone.

  • Dehumidify
Less moisture = cooler feeling air. Just watch out — some dehumidifiers give off heat too.

STAY COOL, STAY PREPARED

It doesn’t take much to keep your AC in great shape — just a bit of attention and smart use. And if things do heat up, you’ve now got some clever ways to beat the heat until help arrives.
